Here are 5 tips to deliver training that starts you on the path to run like a well-oiled machine:
1. Train project teams on the 20% of SEO that drives 80% of the impact. That's it. They don't need to be bonafide SEO experts.
2. Give useful job aids (checklists, decision worksheets, etc.). I see too many generic checklists, that are broad-stroked general best practices that are hard to translate for non-SEOs. To get you thinking differently about how you can equip your non-SEO Teams with the right tools, here is a list I created for project teams attending my online Technical SEO Course. Notice, they are based on the questions project teams ask themselves, in everyday scenarios:
4. Stop talking about Panda, Penguin and algorithm changes. These are important, but only to SEO practitioners - your developers, product managers, BAs, etc. will find it interesting, but not actionable. One of the rules when I train non-SEO Teams is: I don’t talk about specific algorithm updates, because these roles don’t need to know them. If they only remember 3 things from the course, I don’t want them to be a Google update.
5. Teach through examples, not concepts and best practices. When I audit SEO operations at companies, I look at training materials and too often it’s just SEO best practices on slide-after-slide-after-slide (WHAT A BORE!). Mine used to be like that years ago, it didn’t work. Now, I give a lot of examples. It takes a LONG TIME TO FIND GOOD EXAMPLES. Over the years, I created an SEO hall of fame that I use when teaching SEO to non-SEO teams. For example, when describing how to do pagination, you can teach the best practices, but also show how it's being implemented on REI.
